About our Lion's Keeper

Amanda has been with the El Paso Zoo for 25 years, and the lion’s keeper for the past 6 years. Amanda works with and cares for these beautiful, majestic animals daily. She understands their likes, dislikes, habits, characteristics, and physical and mental health.  It takes dedication and a love for animals to ensure for their longevity and overall well-being.

Zari

Her name is of Swahili origin and means golden. She has a patch of missing fur, in a perfect square shape, on the tip of her nose.

Malaika

Her name is of Swahili origin and means angel. She is the most “Talkative” lion of the bunch: meaning she responds most by vocalizing. To distinguish her, look for a lighter-grayish fur color compared to her sisters’ dark tan color.

Kalliope

Her name is based on a Greek mythology character, and means beautiful voice. She loves to play with cardboard boxes ,and has a patch of missing fur, in a circle shape, on the tip of her nose.

Family

These three lions are sisters, they share the same mother.

Is the age of our three lions.

Eats

The lions eat approximately 6 pounds of meat per day.

Home

All three lions have lived at the El Paso Zoo for over 11years.

How long?

Each lion measures approximately 8 ft long from their top oftheir head to the tip of their tail.

Stand-Up

When standing on their hind-legs the lions measure close to7ft tall.

Play Time

The lions love to play just like house cats love to play –pounce, hide, paw, swipe, and roll.
